LAG is pleased to announce Shiho Yoshida’s solo exhibition “The Vestiges of the Unseen” from Friday, March 14, 2025, to Saturday, April 5, 2025.
Yoshida has been creating unique photographs that have multi-laminate landscapes up to the present by combining images generated mainly by photographic prints or projector projection and various image information obtained from the internet. For her solo exhibition held at Art Center BUG in Yaesu in the fall of 2024, she used an offset printing press as a new attempt to follow up on past activities, to print a large number of artworks that had stains by “unfore-seen errors” that she created on purpose, and built a spectacular installation using these artworks. We will make a specially bound book from the printed materials exhibited there and hold an exhibition at LAG to commemorate the book’s publication. In this exhibition, the specially bound book itself will be displayed as a work of art, and we will provide a brand-new installation by converting the contents of the exhibition at BUG into a site-specific installation in the LAG space. We hope you will take this opportunity to see the exhibition.

—Artist Statement—

I created an installation that incorporated images, which were reproduced in large quantities using an offset printing press in the exhibition at BUG last year. Those countless printings were piled up on the floor and put up to cover the wall for blurring the boundary intentionally between “photographs” and “mere papers” and bringing up its border between “visible” and “invisible.” Physical “deviations” such as ink blotches and rubs caused by printing machine error, paper bending, and overlapping were essential elements that amplified that border’s blur. I wanted to establish the accidental vestiges created in this space in the form of a photo book. The errors and misalignments occurred during the printing processes, and by capturing them directly on paper and reconstructing them into bound pages, by doing so, I attempted to materialize them as a “device” to explore new perspectives. By incorporating the sense experienced in the exhibition space into the form of the book, I hope to create an opportunity to reexamine its possibilities.

Shiho Yoshida “The Vestiges of Unseen”
