ayakaendo’s solo exhibition Swaying Flowers will be held at LAG from Friday, December 1 to Saturday, December 23, 2023. Tokyo-based artist ayakaendo, born in 1994, graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Design in 2021, received an Honorable Mention in New Cosmos of Photography 2021 (selected by Yuki Onodera) at the year, and had a solo exhibition The belief in Spiritual Beings at NADiff Gallery in 2022. In 2023, she participated in a group exhibition at Taka Ishii Gallery at Maebashi, her activities are highly regarded not only in the art sphere but also in the fashion world, and she is a young artist who is expected to play a wide range of role in the future.
Swaying Flowers is a remake of a work she created while a student at Tokyo University of the Arts. She photographed flowers with various cameras, transcribed them onto the cloth, and then cut up the edges of the textile to create each piece.
Her photographs of flowers have a mysterious, visionary appeal, and they are also blurred, faded, and whitewashed as if they were obvious, and even the photography composition sometimes gives the viewer a vague impression. This striking feature of her works involves intervening with flowers through the camera or strobe rather than capturing flowers themselves as the object, blurring the border between substance and image, and causing them to be shaking. Furthermore, in this work, she transfers the photograph onto the cloth used as a support, and then physically intervenes by tearing the cloth with her own hands, giving a new texture to the supposedly two-dimensional image of the flower.
These her works produced from this semi-ritualistic process may no longer be classified within the established framework of “flower pho-tography,” but may seem to be transformed into something else.
We hope you see these works, which can be the starting point of her late creativity based on animistic views of nature and the sacred.
※This exhibition is a commemorative exhibition for the new publication of Swaying Flowers, which will be released on December 1, 2023, by rosin books. The new book will be on display and for sale at the venue. The large book made entirely of cloth, which inspired the creation of the new book, will also be displayed at the exhibition.
